Young, Robert Clark. "One of the Guys", Harper Perennial, 2000.

A Brilliant and an Unusual Read

Amos Lassen

"One of the Guys" is a book full of symbolism which is hidden under a very funny story and a wonderful main character, Miles Derry. He learns to deal with the craziness around him and some that he created and ultimately becomes comfortable with who he is. There is some crudity here but I overlook that because of the literary value of the book. This is Young's first novel but I have a feeling we will be hearing a lot more from him and about him.
Miles is the typical hollow man who fleshes out during the plot. He steals an identity while working in a porn store and becomes a Navy chaplain and we learn a lot about the Navy and I understand why the Navy is upset about this. I know I have not said much about the book--that is because I want you to get a copy and enjoy it as I did. The plot is full of twists and turns, the characters are wonderfully constructed and the prose is very special.
