Powell's City of Books -- Why I want to move to Portland

Powell's has all of the friendliness of a local community bookstore, but packs that in with the sheer impressive weight of book goodness that you could get from a medium sized university research library.

They claim to be the largest used and new bookstore in the world, and the size is awesome without being at all daunting, because of the clear and clever organization of the bookstore.

While I only had a few hours to spend in the bookstore, I could easily have spent a few days exploring the various collections.  I'm not sure, however, that my wallet could have survived. The prices on the used books were excellent, but even cheap prices x 1000 purchases can put you in the poor house.
