We need to add one point

This book is excellent and so too is the extensive review. However, we should add one point that I am sure that both the author and the reviewer knew.

This story should not be taken literally. It is not reasonable to think that God would require a prophet to marry someone who is unsuitable for him.

There are two main possibilities. First, the story was never meant to be understood literally, but only as a parable. Or, perhaps the facts did occur, but not by a divine dictate. Hosea did what he did on his own, and later reflected on what he did and saw in his single life experience a message for his people.
