Expected a lot More

I got this book based on such high average customer reviews on Amazon and was amazed that this book was just so-so. It is brutally slow paced the first half. Peter Tyler, a trader, learns that his wife was murdered in his home. As he is the husband he is immediately suspected. The negative publicity that follows causes his firm to let him go.

Tyler learns that on the day his wife was murdered, the only the only thing missing was a package that had arrived from his friend Andrei. Tyler tries to contact Andrei to no avail and then contacts Andrei's twin sister Katya. Apparently Tyler had an affair with Katya that not only ended badly but caused a lot of friction in his marriage when his wife found out.

Katya sends Tyler to Russia in search of Andrei. Meanwhile Tyler acts real smug with the Detective assigned to his murder (Rommy) and then the Detective's replacement (Tillings). What follows are things that had me shaking my head in disbelief. You keep expecting something to happen to Tyler and nothing does until about two thirds into the book and you wonder why the bad guys have not killed him. On top of that, Tyler and his business associate (who he calls Tigger) are both obnoxious and the reader has a "who cares" attitude toward them.

When the who plot is finally revealed, it is the most improbable thing that anyone could have conceived. It felt to me like the author thought up the ending and then decided to create a story around it.
