Pros: Good story, strong characters

Cons: Conflict could be better

Navaho geologist Jamie Waterman returns to Mars in this sequel by Ben Bova. Although a continuation of the previous novel, Bova effectively dispenses with many of the characters from the first book in a quick and efficient manner. With loose ends neatly tied up, Bova goes on to relate an exciting and compelling tale that stands very well on its own.

There are similar conflicts in this piece, but they are more economic than political. New characters introduced in this work add even more to the overall story. An "alpha" male is included to challenge Dr. Waterman, and also a mysterious saboteur. The second Mars expedition sets down with the intent to stay more than a year. The issues they encounter are different as long-term residence presents challenges. They come up with some very interesting solutions. I'm particularly fascinated with the solar brick making for their greenhouse, and the efficiency of the rechargeable fuel cells. I wonder how close to reality this technology really is. How close is this fiction to what is truly feasible? I find this novel though provoking and most interesting. I look forward to another installment.

Can they survive the traitor in their midst? Do they find the mysterious "village" that Waterman thought he glimpsed? Will there be a third MARS expedition?

You'll have to read it to find out--a worthwhile pursuit in my opinion!
