The nice thing about picking up a book by Larry McMurtry is that no matter what genre he's writing in - essay, memoir, history, or novel you're in the hands of a master story teller.

Rhino Ranch is the conclusion of the series started with The Last Picture Show, but I have to admit it's the first of the series that I've read. The story is pretty simple: a rich woman buys a plot of land in order to help save an endangered special of rhinoceros. That's the hinge upon which McMurtry hangs the endangered species of pretty much the last of the good ole' Texans - all characters who many readers have come to love through the series. I came to love them on the strength of this one book. Drinkers, womanizers, eccentrics, old and in the way, but filled with enough life to keep this novel hopping. And, at least one new character, a young and beautiful porn queen who brings the old boys to life in some pretty interesting ways.

Rhino Ranch is a good read - with what may be some of the shortest chapters I've ever encountered. Doesn't seem to be a wasted word in this book, and it's one of those books I didn't want to end, and when it did I felt as though I'd lived through a history.
