Although there have been a few recent setbacks in the movement for gay rights, the situation is still substantially different that it was forty and fifty years ago. The author is a gay man in his mid fifties that was discriminated against and beat up while he was in school. Kerrick grew up in a small town in Kentucky, a location where there was little tolerance for gay men. He also spent decades as a practicing alcoholic and drug abuser until he recently was able to overcome and manage his addictions. …

Jamie Kerrik debuts with this catchy little novel ROLLING WITH THE PUNCHES, and while the adventures of this main character Joey Douglas include some challenging problems that are innately ugly and would suggest a coming of age that bordered on hell, the manner in which Kerrick writes is wisely humorous. He has a fine comedic style that makes even the grossest behaviors and series of incidents have a door of escape for the reader and make the 'rake's progress' aspect of the novel entertaining as …
