In the "Star Trek" original series episode "Balance of Terror" a Romulan ship attacks and destroys a Federation outpost and Captain Kirk engages in a tense battle against the Romulan ship and its commander. It is without question one of the best episodes of the original series. In the episode "Cause and Effect" of the series "Star Trek: The Next Generation" the Enterprise is caught in a time loop where they repeat the same actions, collision with a ship from the past, over and over again. In the episodes "Chain of Command I and II" of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" Captain Picard is captured by a Cardassian commander, stripped naked and tortured. In the episode "Relics" of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" super engineer Scotty of the original series is brought forward into the time frame of Captain Picard and his crew. Finally, the Enterprise is destroyed in the feature-length movie "Star Trek: Generations." The plots of all five of these excellent stories are continued in this book. Furthermore, the book ends with the beginning of the plot of the movie "First Contact."
The story begins with Captain Bateson of the Bozeman engaged in a battle to keep a Klingon ship from crossing into Federation space. Kozara, the captain of the Klingon ship is furious at being foiled in his attempt to win martial glory. As the Bozeman is conducting a fighting retreat from the Klingon ship, it enters a time portal and emerges as the ship the Enterprise collides with in "Cause and Effect."
The command crew of the Enterprise is suffering lingering effects of the destruction of their ship after "Generations" although they experience the thrill of observing a new ship in the series being built. Scotty has studied up on the modern technology and is an integral part of the construction. When it is time to carry out the maiden voyage, the Enterprise crew is surprised when Captain Bateson is given command. The Federation has discovered that the same Cardassian that tortured Picard is holding Star Fleet personnel prisoner and he is sent on a mission to try to recover them. During the trip, Picard accesses detailed records of Kirk's actions in "Balance of Terror" and the program allows him to query the Kirk character in order to gain further insight into his thought processes.
Commander Riker has agreed to serve as first officer under Captain Bateson and Kozara is plotting to capture the new Enterprise and use it to attack the Cardassians. All of this combines to make an exciting and entertaining story, although readers unfamiliar with the referenced episodes and movies will be a bit lost.
