This novel would make a perfect suspense/horror film! It is hard to describe it without presenting spoilers but I will try.
John Waters used to date Mallory Candler while he was in college. She died shortly after and about 20 years pass. Waters is a successful businessman who looks for oil, with a wife and young daughter. One day at his daughter's soccer game Eve, a very sexy looking real-estate agent (think Edie Brit from Desperate Housewives) walks by him and says "soon." Waters is immediately taken aback by this because this is the same code-word, Mallory used to same to him prior to their usual trysts. Things get creepier each time he runs into Eve, for she seems to know things that only Mallory would.
Mallory had given to Waters what no other woman in his had including his wife. Also, his wife has some emotional issues that have caused Waters to live celebite for about 4 years so Waters life gets turned upside down thinking about Mallory/Eve and what may be in store for him.
Both Waters and the reader have to decide if Eve is some type of re-incarnation of Mallory or part of a con team out for Waters money. The reader can understand that if Waters persues Eve/Mallory he will only open a Pandora's box that will threaten him, his family and his freedom.
The story is tense throughout. An excellent change of pace for Iles who usually does not have any elements of the supernatural in his works.

John Waters strikes me as a pretty loaded name. Think there's any reference being made?

I didn't make the connection when I read the book to the director. I am not sure if it is strictly a coincidence.
