Clever modernization of the "hard-boiled gumshoe" character, epitomized by Sam Spade, Philip Marlowe, and Archie Goodwin... with the addition of wizardry! It's an oddly addictive combination that has resulted in a great many equally enjoyable sequels. The A&E series is very good (in my opinion); the books are a little darker, not quite as flashy. Excellent reading, even so!
