An post-apocalyptic tale about the war between good and evil.
Swan Song is in my top five favorite books about the post-apocalypse.  It's a simple tale about good versus evil and the struggle to survive in a world after a nuclear holocaust.  The huge tome starts off with the President of the United States making a fatal decision about being the first to push the button.  Aided and abetted by his hawkish generals, he decides to wipe out most of humankind off of the face of the Earth.   From there the story follows several characters, …

Fans of the Stand will be drawn to Swan Song as well. McCammon conjures a post nuclear war world involving the major super powers and some smaller nations. The US believes that a Soviet "first strike" is imminent and takes steps to back the Soviets off. There has already been some small scale nuclear attacks started by terrorists and leading to some small scale nuclear use by governments. Swan Song by Robert R. McCammon
I am a fan of the post-apocalypse-survival-band type novels, and this is one of the best written ones out there. McCammons characters are fully fleshed out and complete, his vision of the desolated terrain and the behavior patterns of those who survive are terrifyingly realistic. There is Sister Creep, a bag lady with a tragic past who escapes immediate death by sleeping deep under the subway tunnels of NYC.
