Terra Incognita: A Novel of the Roman Empire

1 rating: 5.0
A book by Ruth Downie

Starred Review. Downie's thrilling murder mystery set against the vivid backdrop of the Roman Empire in the year A.D. 118 is well realized by the classical voice of Simon Vance. The reading is perfectly delivered, with Vance's traditional English dialect … see full wiki

Murder at the edge of empire

This is the second book in the series featuring Russo, a doctor (medicus) in the Roman legion stationed in Britain in the early second century A.D.. In this book, Russo volunteers to travel to the northernmost outpost of the empire, to a place beyond which there are mostly "barbarian" tribes. As usual, where he goes murder seems to happen.
Once again Russo is thrown into the middle of a murder mystery when one of the soldiers statoned at this remote outpost is brutally killed, and his head removed. Additionally, the natives appear to be influenced by a shadowy figure with antlers on his head, supposedly the manifestation of one of their local gods. This god is presumed to be the murderer, as his task is to free the people from the Romans.
Russo's "housekeeper" Tilla acompanies him, as this place is where she was born and raised. She goes off on her own to spend her time with her relatives and friends, leaving Russo to wonder whether or not she is a "friend of the army" or will stay with her own folks when he leaves for his next assignment.
There are a number of suspects abounding in this fairly fast-paced plot, and all of the characters are well written and interesting. To discover what happened, and the future of Russo and Tilla, I strongly suggest you read this book. You will not be disappointed!
