Fun childrens series

Fourth-grader Quinn Higgins is a pleasant young man, well-suited as protagonist in Douglas Quinn's series of chapter books for young readers. Quinn's parents are divorced, and every summer Quinn travels across the country to stay at his Dad’s log cabin three hours from Portland, Oregon. For three whole weeks he’ll hang out with Charlotte “Little Dove” Evans, playing in the woods, investigating mysteries with his new detective kit, and, of course, never crossing the stream. But a bear is raiding trash-cans, and someone, maybe the bear or maybe something even more exciting, has been sheltering in the fort Quinn built last summer. Meanwhile Little Dove might be able to reveal more background to the legend of Bigfoot. The story has caught Quinn’s imagination, and enormous footprints inspire more exploration.

The Indian legend is nicely retold, and the relationship between Indian and settler is presented in a comfortable, settled way. Charlotte’s family provide a solid, safe background as the children camp out in the yard and cook food on their own little fire. Raccoons thieve, fish bite, and the world of Oregon forests is brought to life with varied sentences, natural conversation, and a child’s trust and curiosity.

Of course, the children don’t obey all the rules, and don’t tell their parents everything. But then, who would believe them if they did? The Case of Bigfoot on the Loose is the second story in this series, well-plotted for seven-year-old readers and parents to share, with a third coming soon.
