Not exactly the BEST life... but decent

Pros: easy to read, great recipes

Cons: not all that unique

The Bottom Line: I personally found this book to be quite good in comparison to others and definitely useful in your dieting plans.

My girlfriend has recently begun a health trip, unfortunately she doesn't workout or want to do anything that involves exercise in any form. This of course is somewhat of a concern to me as I just got out of the military where I was a personal trainer for the last two years of my career. I myself am very big about staying healthy, eating healthy, and working out on a regular basis. This doesn't mean that I'm big on muscle, just big on healthy living and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. So when I realized that my girlfriend wanted nothing to do with this lifestyle, I found that I would have to help her out in other ways with a great deal of encouragement along the way. The bad thing was that she didn't care how much I knew about health and nutrition, she wanted to do it as much as she could on her own with information from any source except for from me. She didn't want to feel as if I was her personal trainer, she wanted me to just be her boyfriend, not both.

After a while of saying that she was going to do something about her weight, she finally broke down and purchased some weightloss books in order to help motivate her and help her to jump start her diet. She just didn't know where to begin and refused to talk to me about it. One of the very first and most useful of the books that she purchased was The Best Life Diet by Bob Greene.

Rather than the standard methods that are used in the large majority of dieting books, Bob Greene admits that dieting is incredibly difficult and attempts to make the diet as easy and painless as possible. Rather than attempting to push you to lose 10 pounds per week, he uses much more realistic and sustainable results. Also, he doesn't require that you give up the foods that you love, he just requires that you change the way you look at those foods.

The whole premise of the diet is that rather than controlling food and making your life miserable during the diet, you essentially just change your perceptions and bad habits. You are taught how to eat healthier without sacrificing flavor. When you sacrifice flavor, that's when the diet becomes difficult and that is when many diets begin to fail. The idea is that rather than attempting to lose lots of weight by eating horrible food, you cut a little weight at a time by eating foods that are healthier for you and keeping up with the diet over a longer period of time. This will ultimately have the greatest overall results anyway.

The book also features numerous recipes that you can use to make delicious meals rather than leaving it on you to find recipes that will work. The recipes included are quite delicious, very easy to make, and can easily take the place of many of your favorites, helping you to easily make the healthy choice without feeling robbed.

Personally, I found myself enjoying the smoothies that you can make, even though I wasn't even on the diet. The recipes were good enough that I found myself eating the food along with my girlfriend even though I had no interest in being on a diet.

The main focus on the book is the 'lifestyle' of healthy eating. The idea is to NOT think of it as being on a diet. If you think of it as a diet you are going to look at it negatively and fail. The idea is to look at it as a lifestyle change that is meant to be positive.

My Thoughts
Personally, I found this book to be quite informative. While I didn't feel like it was all that different than many other books on the market, I do feel that it is written in a manner that is thorough, easy to understand, and keeps things interesting enough that you don't give up on the diet on the basis of being bored while reading alone.

The recipes within the book are quite delicious and truly make the diet what it is. The recipes are much healthier than many other foods that we eat on a regular basis and the smoothies are great in general.

I would have to say that regardless of how little the book changes the knowledge that is already out there, it is an excellent read with a much better combination of knowledge than most other books around the market.
