My apology to Evelyn Waugh for taking the name of one of his books for the title of this review. He also had a jaundiced view of the "bright young things" who littered the London scene after the First World War, as I do.

Although the protagonist predated the "byt" by a few years, she was certainly one of those people that we can now look back on and detest. They never worked a day in their lives, and only moved from party to party, dance to dance, drug to drug, and bed to bed. What an existence of total uselessness! Unfortunately, the actions of the people in the book tended to color my perception of it, which isn't really fair to the author, who does a good job of recreating the times and the people.

My one quibble would be that there were times when I wish the author whould have included at lesst a year to set in time when something happened. Other than that, I find she did a very good job baring the life of her greatgrandmother, and it was an interesting, if not completely satisfying, read.
