Pros: offers discipline help without being harsh or making excuses

Cons: none

The Bottom Line: Great book for everyone to read, though the first paragraph may not be liked by someone who doesn't agree with that parenting style

This book really stands out in my head as I have read it at least 2 or 3 times. This was actually the first book I read on discipline when my 1st child was only 1½ years old. Boy was I glad to find this book. It described a method of parenting I had been doing all along, by instinct, but didn’t know it was a “parenting style”. Since it was a similar “parenting style” it’s discipline methods were right on target for what I was looking for. This book uses a gentle method of discipline. It starts out describing what is referred to as “attachment parenting”, including the 5 key things to doing this. It then goes on into ways of creating a bond with your child and how that bond will make disciplining easier (or sometimes not even necessary). It also covers methods of discipline geared to children as young as 15 months old. This includes redirection, distraction, time out, and even “the look”. To be well rounded it does state that it does not condone spanking as the best method of discipline but if you do spank it covers the right and wrong things to do. In addition it talks about ways to talk to and work with your child to avoid the need to discipline. Positive reinforcement information is included to help encourage good behavior rather than discourage negative behavior.

I really like that this book offers a positive and gentle method of parenting without making excuses. I have read many books on discipline that were just to harsh. But on the other side I have read many books that consider themselves “positive” or “gentle” when in reality they just made excuses for your child’s behavior and implied you should do the same. I want to discipline gently but I do want to teach them what’s right, to discipline them not just let them run wild while making excuses for their behavior. I think this book offers the best of both.

Sounds like a great book! What you are describing is essentially how I have been disciplining my almost two year old, it just seems like such a natural and instinctive way for me to encourage positive behavior. :) I actually just wrote an article about it yesterday on my blog, what a coincidence I found your review!
