When I received The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson, I really had no idea what to expect. This book has been getting a lot of buzz, and that’s not always a good indicator of its actual quality, so I was hesitant….but I was completely and totally awed by Andrew Davidson’s immense talent. The book begins when the nameless narrator’s cocaine- and bourbon-induced hallucinations lead to a horrible car crash during which most of his body is burned beyond recognition. …

I can't remember when I've had such a hard time writing a book review as I've had with this review The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson. On the surface, this is a simple story about the physical recovery of a severely burned pornographer and his relationship with a mentally ill sculptor, but as the book unfolds, it becomes clear that the book is so much more. The book starts out almost completely as a cliché--an evil pornographer is severely burned and realizes he has nothing left to live for. The characters …

This is the first book I've ever read where three vice-presidents and top editors of a world-renowned publishing house wrote and signed a glowing foreword for any author. I was impressed, and due to the pre-hype and outstanding publicity for The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson, I couldn't wait to read it.    They bill it as "an international sensation ... the most extraordinary debut novel of the decade, a riveting love story about the redemptive power of suffering and a romance …

This is a rather odd, but interesting and lovely book. It tells the story of a severely burned man who is visited by a woman who claims to have lived for 700 years, and to have been his lover in the 14th century. She tells him stories of love in different countries, in addition to telling him their story in increments. To go further into the plot would really be to ruin the book for those who have not read it as of yet. I found the writing well done, the characters deliniated perfectly, and the …

'The Gargoyle' is not an easy read by any means. In the first chapter the main character, a porn producer and actor, is high while driving and gets in a violent car accident. As a result, he is badly burned and goes through much of the book rehabilitating from his injuries, a painful process, described in great detail. The description of the burn itself, in that first chapter, was so graphic that it almost made me put down the book and stop right there.    But from that difficult …

This is an amazing book. Rarely you come across a novel that opens up a whole new world. Davidson has earned my eternal gratitude. The writing is beautiful, the characters realistic, and the story kept me riveted. I began to care about the characters very quickly, and then I had to know what would happen to them. I love that in a novel.     One of the subplots concerns the lives and mystical writings of an obscure group of medieval Dominican nuns. That hardly seems like a spellbinding …
