A book by Jonathan Carroll

Death is not the end but rather the start of a series of madcap and sometimes moving adventures for characters in this spry novel about the un-afterlife. Events begin on a wintry day in Connecticut when Ben Gould slips and hits his head on a curb. He … see full wiki

We no longer think that we believe in fate. We no longer think about destiny. We are our own creatures, or so we assume. But we can only maintain such illusions by overlooking death. Death happens to all of us, and we don't get to choose the how or the when.     Jonathan Carroll's deliriously metaphysical fantasy imagines that as all changing one day when some of us start deciding not to die. The problem, as it turns out, is that once we have secured for ourselves an indefinitely …

The Ghost in Love is a well written but overall pointless and rather boring novel. The plot is essentially that something has gone haywire in the universe and humans have taken over their own fate. People are supposed to die at their appointed time, but they don't. There is a glitch in the system and the powers that be are trying to fix it to restore order, while other powers that be are trying to prevent it.     This novel follows the plight of Ben Gould, who slips in the snow …

The cooking scenes kept me reading, even though I'm not much of a cook.    Jonathan Carroll's new novel, The Ghost in Love, bogs down in places. I know next to nothing about the "magical realism" genre, so this book was a bit of a departure for me. In terms of picking one of those two terms, magical would seem to have more play in this novel than realism, though there is plenty of both.    You can read this book on several different levels, depending on how deep you want to delve. It can be just a story, like any other. Or you can pay attention to some of the themes within the story, such as predestination, free will, …

A young man, Ben, hits his head on a curb. He's supposed to die but he doesn't. He lives on and his ghost joins him: she's a small Chinese woman named Ling. Ben can talk to her. He can talk to his dog Pilot too. After the accident, Ben sees into the head of Danielle as well. A small plane crashed near her and the cap of a fountain pen cap was driven into her forehead. It left a scar but she's not dead either. Some people -not a lot--are deciding not to die when they're supposed to and it bothers …
