Horror in Maine

  • Jun 28, 2010
This is a perfect summer beach reading book. The plot is extremely interesting, it flows quickly and keeps your attention, and there are shivers and shocks galore.

There is a very wealthy family that owns an enormous home on the rocky coast of Maine, and every ten years the members gather there. A lottery is held, and the person whose name is drawn must spend the night in a rooom in which, around 1930, a maid was skewered to the wall with a pitchfork. Of course, the next morning, the person who goes into the room ends up dead, often in horrifying ways.

The patriarch of the family, who is 98, hires a young female investigator to attempt to discover what (or who) is causing these deaths, and the plot just roars on from there. Many scenes are quite gruesome, but they do advance the plot. It's rather straightforward, but occasionally the author throws the reader a curve, just to keep him or her off balance.

The ending, when it came, didn't really surprise me, because there was some telegraphing about it scattered throughout the book, but it was still thrilling. If you are on vacation and have some hours to relax and read, you can do well by taking this book along with you.
