The rise and fall of Queen Joanna

  • Sep 9, 2009
I've always believed that the Middle Ages was a time of intrigue, murder and general mayhem, and this book certainly confirms that belief! It's a biography of a remarkable woman who was Queen of Naples (among other places), and had to carefully work her way through all of the dangers and conspiracies that existed at that time.

Women were considered commodities then, and even a queen was used as a bargaining chip in forming marriage alliances among other rulers. Joanna had to combat enormous difficulties in her time, not least of which was the changing papal rulers in Avignon, and later Rome. They were either her friends or her enemies, and she strove mightily to kep them on her side.

She was married several times, accused, tried and found not guilty of the murder of her first husband, kept her kingdom from being overrun by the Kingdom of Hungary, amnong other problems. There's no question that she was one amazing woman and this book does her justice. It's an extremely interesting read that I highly recommend.
