Thrilling story, tediously told

  • Aug 30, 2009
I'll skip the recap since you can find it elsewhere. I had to put down this book after five chapters because of Ringo's choice to write the book as one long monologue, recapping the entire history of the downfall of the world.

It doesn't help that Bandit Six is a dull character. It takes a genius of an author to craft someone who is arrogant, intelligent and a storyteller and make him the kind of guy who will grab your arm at a party and dig his words into your ear until you're willing to cut your arm off to get away.

Because Ringo chose this form of first-person omniscent narration, all the drama and tension is drained, and it becomes a tedious repetition of facts, interspersed solely with f-bombs. For an Army man, Ringo is a poor cusser.

So, if you're at all interested in this type of story (and I am, so I was deeply disappointed with this), try to check out a chapter before you consider buying it. Read it, and understand that you're going to get several hundred pages of Bandit bending your ear, and that will help you decide on your purchase.
