Real Cambridge, real colleges, real England

The Masters is my favorite of C.P. Snow's Strangers and Brothers series, but I'd have to confess, I love the whole series and struggled to collect the set when I was in college--yes, at Cambridge University, England. the novel centers on the choosing of a new Master as the old Master lies dying, and, of course, the author knows exactly what he's writing about. The language, dialog, atmosphere, scents and sounds are perfectly portrayed. There's politics, confusion, the overwhelming importance of the incredibly obscure, and such wonderful characters that you feel you might meet them dashing across the court or hear their footsteps tap-tapping on stone stairs. It's a wonderfully atmospheric book in a wonderfully, quintessentially English series. If you've ever wondered what Cambridge College life might feel like, look no further.
