Lacking in Helpful Advice

  • Jul 12, 2010
I found this book to be very unsatisfying and here's why: as the parent of an infant who has some sleep trouble, I want actionable suggestions, and I want them to be based on research or data of some kind.  This whole book is about what the author did with her kids- a universe of 4- and doesn't offer a lot in the way of helpful advice.  She admits that none of her kids slept well.  She didn't start sleep training the youngest until he was older.  The section on loveys- how to get your kid attached to a stuffed animal or blanket so they're less attached to you- was about 3 sentences.  I suppose I'm just in a sleep-deprived state, and I thought from the title of this book that it would help me gently put my daughter to bed.  After reading it, I'm in the same place I was before reading it.

I remember being sleep deprived! I still am now but at least it's because I work when my baby sleeps, not because she doesn't sleep well! My girl is almost 18 months, she has never been a very great sleeper. But my perspective on it goes like this: they are small for a really short time, before you know it they will grow up and will sleep great! It's all in perspective, it seems hard when you're in the midst of it, but I try to look at our situation from the outside and I realize that it will be over before I even figure it out! :) We are practicing extended nursing, so she still falls asleep with me, but at least now she doesn't wake up every two hours!
