Why was Joseph Ratzinger chosen as the 264th successor to St. Peter?

78, Ratzinger was far and away the most well known, the most respected and in some circles the most feared cardinal in the Roman Catholic Church. Ratzinger was an insider. He is a man of keen intellect and an extremely influential theologian.
