Well Written, Well Argued, Thought Provoking

This book is a pleasure to read, simply as a book. It's well constructed, elegantly written, and erudite without being difficult to follow. It's also a valuable addition to the conversation on evolution.

Foster begins with a recap of the recent dramatic controversy between evangelical atheists like Richard Dawkins and fundamentalists supporting a young earth creationist view. The two sides, Foster argues, have much more in common than they realize. His discussion of their approaches, in contrast with the more mainstream (and less publicized) positions of other biologists and other Christians, is fascinating. Foster brings up new research and data in the course of the discussion, as well as giving a fair summary of previous work for those who haven't been reading along as the controversy has developed.

Foster then approaches the philosophical and theological issues. How can creationists cope with the problem of evil? How can strict "Darwinists" (of whom, Foster reminds us, Darwin was not one) cope with the problem of goodness?

Foster says in his preface that he expects to offend everyone, and he may indeed offend people. But I think that a better response to the book would be to discuss the many interesting points it brings up, and perhaps to look at things a bit differently as a result of having read it.
