Cannot be read apart from The Golden Compass. It is a solid second part to the trilogy. Since Mr. Pullman has written other novels for young adults, this novel doesn't suffer from the second-novel-syndrome that is so common. I thought the pace of the adventure in Golden Compass was impressive, Subtle Knife amps that adventure by at least one magnitude.

i really enjoyed the entire series of 'his dark materials' but i found that 'the subtle knife' was my favorite of the three books. i like the way the children progress in this story, it is the perfect segue into the third instillation of the series. the adventure is rich and it is definitely a page turner, the characters really get built up to show their true natures.
