The Things They Carried has been my favorite book for almost a whole decade - saying something as I am only 25. But like the previous reviewer, I too was assigned The Things They Carried for a high school english class, only to remember pieces of it from a read-aloud when I was much younger. The book reads more as a collection of thoughts that are strung together by the obvious common theme (the Vietnam War), but also through characters that the narrator meets both at war and at home. A somewhat surprisingly great "memoir" about the Vietnam War. Although the title suggests more than a few shallow metaphors, which make it into many parts of the book, there are some truly moving scenes that more than make up for it.

Absolutely fantastic writing. There's a reason they make writing students study it. Enthralling stories of the war in Vietnam--fictional, though based on O'Brien's firsthand experiences.

The Things They Carried   To be honest, I was a bit skeptical when I began this book. It was a book assigned to my Literature class, so naturally I wasn’t thrilled. As I delved deeper into it, I began to realize I was oh so wrong.  The novel is told in a way that is at first confusing (hopefully I don’t spoil anything here…).
