Cautionary tale

  • Oct 26, 2009
"The Travelers" is a cautionary tale of young backpackiing American tourists getting pulled into escorting drugs back to the U. S. The downward spiral starts slowly and ends as you might expect.

This slim book reads like a first draft from personal experience. The author is credited as a Berkeley artist known throughout the West Coast of the U. S., so there is no indicator there that this might be her own story, but it feels like something she knows. As a first draft by a new author there are problems--awkward syntax, settings with the sketchiest of description, characters that aren't fully realized, and dialogue that sounds forced.

As I've said before, narrative fiction (particularly believable dialogue) is probably the hardest form of writing to undertake, even though it seems the simplest, and I have suggested in reviewing first-time books by authors from other lines of work that they stick closer to their area of expertise. The same would apply here. The heart and passion of Henderson are in the book, but getting them out of the story may take more work than the reader will give.

Still, it can be read quickly and will make you think.
