The dead just don't stay dead in these books.....Vampires, Witches and Werewolves oh my!

This is a review of a combination of books three and four of The Vampire Diaries, entitled The Fury and The Dark Reunion. I felt that these two books where an improvement over the first two in the series. The story becomes a little more interesting, and less focused on Elena only. The writing improved in this one (as i find happens often in series books) and the dialog becomes much less repetitive and more articulate. I find myself liking the main character of Elena less and less throughout these two books. Not that she is a completely unbelievable character, more because she is portrayed as being really selfish, needy, and a little winey when she dosen't get her way (especially in book 3). I also find that i like the characters of Meredith and Bonnie more since they play bigger roles in these two books. I also find myself more and more attracted to Damon's character (mostly book 4) he's really starting to come out of his shell and isn't really so bad underneath it all. One thing i can say about these books is that the story definitely gets stranger and stranger as it progresses, if you are looking for your typical vampire love story, this is not the book series for you.

Book 3, The Fury: This book picks up right where book two left off where Elena's car went into the river and she drowned...but did not die. Elena awakens from death as a vampire and also missing her short term memory resulting in some confusion over her guy preferences. After Elena's amnesia wears off she realizes that Damon is not the one who chased her off the bridge that resulted in her untimely demise, and that there is a much greater and more malevolent force at work in Fells Church. After convincing Damon and Stefan to work together alongside the newly resurrected Elena and her mortal accomplices (including quite a bit of help from Bonnie's ever-growing psychic powers)  the mystery of the Other Power is solved, and its far from what i'd expected. Someone from Damon and Stefan's distant past who was believed to be dead has returned to take her revenge on the boys for an offense committed centuries before. This person, as it turns out, is responsible for ending Elena's mortal life as well. With yet another memorable dramatic ending this book closes with Stefan seriously injured, Damon nearly dead, and Elena no longer inhabiting the realm of the living....undead or otherwise.

Book 4, The Dark Reunion: Elena's friends in Fells Church are seemingly doomed to be haunted by the memory of their friend forever. First she dies and makes a stunning return as a vampire only to be killed again less than two months later. Stefan and Damon have left Fells Church in mourning leaving Elena's friends alone and unprotected. Not to long after Elena's death, strange things begin to happen in town again. Bonnie is having dreams of Elena that may or may not be real attempts at contacting her from beyond the grave, there is an unexplained murder. It appears that yet another great supernatural power has made Fells Church it's home. In over their head's with the supernatural Bonnie, Meredith, and Matt contact Stefan and (accidentally) Damon, to come to their aide. As it turns out the dreams that Bonnie is having are real, Elena is trying to warn them of a very powerful vampire that has come to Fells Church. With Elena's help Stefan realizes that he knows who this vampire is, and he also discovers some very interesting information about the Smallwood family namely Tyler. In their quest to find a way to kill this vampire they must dig deep into Meredith's much covered up family history. Towards the end of this book i thought the story was going  less dramatically than the last two, until Smith pulls her final trick from her sleeve and delivers the drama in full force! Just when i thought everyone was going to die and evil would prevail.....something so unexpected and innovative happens ( i won't spoil it) changing the entire storyline.

The dead just don't stay dead in these books.....Vampires, Witches and Warewolves oh my!
