oddly haunting, nicely done

This was my first purchase of a "really short book," as opposed to a "really short e-book." I review really short e-books every once in a while, but I must admit I still like having real paper and real covers in my hands when I read.

The Vampires' Curse contains three stories of varying lengths in 38 pages, with an introduction where the author explains how the stories came about. Two of the stories were written while he was in high school and used by his teacher to illustrate how to write fantasy and horror. I found myself wondering if my teachers' reading my stories to the class constituted any similarly formal approval of them, but, unlike this author, I never got as far as trying to get my early tales published.

I don't know if the stories would still have reminded me of high school if I hadn't read their Genesis. Perhaps instead they'd have reminded me of the early science fiction anthologies I used to buy for sixpence in Woolworths and hide in the bottom of my schoolbag. The language has that odd mixture of old and new that old horror stories used to love, with judicious "somethings" and "nothings" listening and waiting. The copper taste of blood, the nagging paranoia, the ponderously mythic names...

The book has a haunting image on its cover, reminiscent of those ruined abbeys I so love in England, and a haunting verbal image at its end, delightfully conceived. I found myself forgiving the odd awkward phrase and admitting, yes, I quite enjoyed the ride. A trip into the past, a memory of my high school English class, and a fun little read.
