Ferguson uses H. G. Wells' "War of the Worlds" as a pattern for the 20th Century "War of the World"--the period of world-wide violence that spanned approximately the first 50 years of the century. The sub-title is "Twentieth-Century Conflict and the Descent of the West". The author never quite establishes his "descent of the West" theme, though he does try. On the other hand, this is probably the best history of 20th Century conflict.     Ferguson's scope is sweeping and in many ways astonishing. He traces the ethnic and racial animosities that marked the 20th Century and fueled the slaughter of the Armenians, Jews and other groups. His analysis of the Germans is breathtaking: …
