A couple of young lovers, Nate and Sara, are on their way to Reno. They are almost broke and trying to leave bad memories behind.

Along the way they stop for food and at the tavern they meet a man who tells them his car has died and offers them $500. to drive him to Reno. Almost broke, they accept his offer.

During the trip, the man seems nervous and tells them that a woman named Lilith is after him. They continue to drive but as a snowstorm grows worse, they pull into a run-down motel for the night.

The man, Sly, is unconscious in the car because of an injury and as Nate looks at Sly's wound, he sees that Sly has been shot and it looks very serious. Nate removes Sly's money belt and drags him from the car, leaving him outside because he can't explain his presence and doesn't think Sly will live long.

The noir novel reminded me of the kind of story Alfred Hitchcock was famous for. Everyone is stock at the motel while the storm rages outside.

As the characters come together, they learn that Nate has taken a large amount of money from Sly. Greed begins to take over and various things happen as everyone conspires to get their hands on the money.

This is a quick read and could be just right for a summer vacation.

The action is nicely described and the story is packed with tension. All that was needed was the creepy music to let the reader and characters know that danger lurked in the shadows.
