Well written & crafted story, but hard to take at times

This macabre serial-killer thriller kicks into gear right from page one. Though I was well-acquainted with this genre (I've read most of Jeffery Deaver's work), this killer and his particular style of killing (religiously motivated) were still quite a shock.

While the book is well-written and the story well told, the specifics of these crimes and this killer really turned me off at the beginning--the shock value felt gratuitous, like the author was trying to pull out all the stops to freak out the reader.

Thankfully, this does not continue throughout the book. After the first few victims, it turns into a cat & mouse game between a female police detective and the serial killer, an otherwise handsome and charming man.

I am struggling between trying to give people a warning about some of the content of this book and yet not giving away critical plot points. I'll suffice by saying that the following elements are, in some shape or form, contained in this book and if that would be disturbing for you, then I wouldn't recommend this book for you--religious blasphemy, incest, child abuse, necrophila, and pedophilia.

I also struggled with the star rating for my review. I couldn't give it 5 stars because of what felt like the gratuitous nature of the crimes, but it seemed too well written and crafted to warrant 3 stars, so I've settled on 4.
