Pros: good organization

Cons: vague information, biased information

I hear this book referred to as a "must-have" for new parents. When I was a new parent I believed that for a while. Now on my second child and hundreds of parenting books later, I still have this book in my library but it is not my first choice for anything but development. Since my kids have always been advanced, that really means nothing.

What I really liked about the book, and still do, is the way it is organized. It is set up in month to month and specialty sections. In the particular month of your child's age it has sections that list what your child should be, probably be, possibly be, and may even be doing developmentally. It also lists what to expect at that month's checkup if there is one. It also includes questions and answers to common questions in that month and sometimes little bits on special concerns or nutrition.

What I really didn't like was the answers to a lot of the questions, they were vague and didn't cover many viewpoints or options. I think the book also caters more to a bottle feeding, working parent. It also has an unrealistic section on buying for baby. It has a small section on postpartum care which I find did not describe problems accurately or offer good solutions.

The book also covers first aid and common childhood illnesses. It covers both of these topics too vaguely though and I have found many other books that do it better.

Basically most of the sections in this book were not up to par. I still like having the book as a reference for development because it is easier to navigate then most. I also like the section on travel and packing for trips or just your diaper bag.
