T. L. Needham's writing captures a reader's attention in the first few pages of When I Was A Child. Needham is the nephew of Louis and the son of Geraldine Pfeiffer. Their close bond as brother and sister is one of the most beautiful aspects about this book.
I found myself caring about the people in this book like they were members of my own family and not just Needham's. When the mother of young children die in a book, I immediately feel a sense of sadness and empathy for the survivors. The setting of this book is a town called Kansas during the Great Depression and World War II. I admire the strength of Needham's grandfather Alex as he tries to financially support and raise his six children alone. The process of making moonshine is described in this book. This is an interesting procedure to read about.Needham provides many experiences about the lives of his aunts and uncles in this book. He could easily write an individual book about each of them.
The writing in this book gives me a sense of how hard life really was back then. Kansas is a place notoriously known for the number of dangerous tornados and blizzards that come through the state. I instantly get a sense of how physically dangerous living in Kansas really is.
This book follows every stage of Louis Pfeiffer's life. I enjoyed reading about his experiences as an Airborne paratrooper in World War II. It is exciting to read about all the things that a paratrooper is asked to do. I am inspired by his courage and his will to survive. He survived World War II because of his intense early experiences in his childhood. When I Was A Child is the best book of non fiction I have read in a long time.
