Kendall Deaton is a young wife and mother with a terrible secret about her husband. So far so good. She leaves him, taking their baby with her, and the car in which she is a passenger plunges into a ravine. Kendall and her baby survive unscathed, but the driver, whom she had to pull from the vehicle before it slides into a raging stream, suffers a broken leg and, of all things, amnesia. She knows who he is, but he hasn't a clue. Incredibly, the nurses at the hospital where they are treated allow Kendall and son to stay there, free of charge, until the driver is discharged. Apparently, they also provide babysitting service in the hospital nursery. There is a certain amount of tension in the first third of the book, before the details of Kendall's situation and secret are revealed. The rest of the plot consists of a desperate but predictable chase, with Kendall and the forgetful stranger fleeing for their lives with the baby. The Witness is nothing more or less than the standard romance/suspense novel; it contains relatively non-graphic violence and passages with considerable sexual content.
