Southern regionalisms

  • May 8, 2011
Roy Wilder, Jr. compiles a list of slang from the southeastern part of the United States--the Old South of the War between the States.  There is nothing scholarly here, and no organization other than loosely grouped chapters such as "Some Strong Words and Loose Talk" and "Character and Personality Defined Flat Out."  Some of the entries are words or phrases with definitions, others are similes or country expressions defined by reference to other words or expressions.

While this collection surely isn't intended to be anything more than humorous bathroom reading, that lack of organization is still a nuisance.  Some of the words or phrases are repeated in different chapters, while within each chapter there is no alphabetic or topical organization, so searching for a specific word or finding a remembered word or phrase is impossible.  Also, while a few entries give the roots of the word or phrase, most don't, a lost opportunity for more insight into the wit and intelligence of the Southern vocabulary.

But as a citizen of North Carolina for the last ten years, I can vouch for the authenticity of many of the entries contained herein.  My personal favorites:
  • Overhearing a customer services representative tell a user of the software I was helping develop and test to "mash own" (press) the enter key.
  • Learning that "cut own" the TV was the opposite action to cutting (or turning) off the TV.
  • Figuring out that "get up with" someone meant to meet with them later, and that to "carry my kids to school" was to carpool them, not literally carry them.

Great write-up, Todd! I liked your additions. I've never been to the South but, I'd love to visit one of these days. It's too bad about the poor organization because this could've been a helpful and fun book. Thanks for sharing :)
