Soft magic on the breeze

  • Jun 27, 2010
My lifelong appreciation of Zatanna Zatara recently bloomed into love--so learning the wonderful Paul Dini is writing Zatanna's new series was almost as nice as receiving roses from Zatanna herself. There's a soft shimmering magic that floats in the panels of Dini's first "Zatanna," the kind of magic that makes me think Dini has more than a few big, fluffy rabbits to pull out of his writer's cap in this series. His colleagues report that Dini's secretly in love with the Mistress of Magic, and it shows in his vibrant, lively characterization of Ms. Zatara: she's gifted, she's clever, she's very smart, and she's fun and playful on top.

In this first issue, Dini sets up Brother Night, an otherworldly kingpin looking to extend his loveless bones over San Francisco's human underbelly. Nice. Dini also introduces Zatanna's obvious will-be love interest, a working-guy San Fran detective. Knowing Dini's writing, he'll make that work, and make it work well. Stephane Roux's art complements Dini's writing in a way similar to how Bruce Timm's art complemented the writing on "Batman: The Animated Series"--although Roux's depiction of the aforementioned charming detective looks like a detective on a soap opera, or "Grey's Anatomy," not that there's much difference. My biggest question after Issue 1: is it just me, or does Roux's Zatanna look like Dini's wife?
