"Seven lonely nights make one lonely me." Song lyrics

This story begins with someone accusing the South African police of covering up the murder of Henneke Sloet, an attractive attorney who was stabbed to death in her luxury apartment. There were no signs of a struggle.

With the delay in the investigation, a sniper begins shooting policemen. He sends emails to the police and states that he believes the police are covering up this crime and he will continue to shoot police officers until they arrest the person who shot Sloet.

Benny Griessel, is assigned to the case. He's a member of the Hawks. This specialized unit of the South African police department is for high profile cases.

Benny is a recovering alcoholic and, at the start of the story, he's dating a woman named Alexia. He met her after her husband's death, for which she wrongfully accuses herself. She's also an alcoholic and in need of care and support but the time Benny spends on this murder investigation takes away from time he'd like to give to Alexia to help her in her fight against alcohol.

Henneke had worked for a law firm that was involved with a major transaction with a black only, owned business. Benny's team researches public pension funds and how they can be diverted to invest in certain schemes such as that being presented by this black -only business. They also examine how people can be placed on the board of directors of these pension funds so that certain investment ideas get approved.

Unlike many protagonists in police procedurals, Benny has doubts about his abilities and this makes him seem more normal and we want him to succeed in his effort to get the job done.

The story unfolds at a leisurely pace as if this is the way of life in South Africa. However, underneath that relaxed pace, is the heart pounding effort to find a killer and stop this sniper from shooting other police officers.
