In Aberdeen, Scotland, Det. Sgt. Logan MacRae is assigned to the "Screw-up Squad" when one of the men under him is critically wounded during a botched raid on a factory that was supposed to be full of stolen merchandise.

He's assigned to D.I. Steel, a wise-cracking, glory stealing supervisor who must have some secret with the Chief Inspector because she gets away with many things and is never criticized.

Logan and Steele's priority case is that of murdered prostitutes who are dismembered.

Logan also works with another supervisor in his free time so he can get out of the "Screw-Up Squad." This squad is investigating a series of arson's resulting in deaths.

The novel succeeds with excellent dialog and  a humorous banter that is necessary for the police authorities to relieve the horror of what they have to deal with, burned bodies and dismembered corpses.

MacRae is a good protagonist who isn't perfect. He's rambunctious but the people under him, appreciate him as a good cop and a successful criminal investigator.
