Det. Archie Sheridan is still recovering from his last encounter with serial killer Gretchen Lowell.
As the story begins, Archie is at Mount Tabor Park in Portland. He and his men are examining the body of Jack Kelly who was murdered, tied to a tree by his wrists and appeared to have been skinned from the neck down.
Archie's men are concerned about him and he admits to being weak. He was almost killed by Gretchen who is now at a State Mental Hospital. Then he gets a call from Gretchen's shrink. She asks for Archie's help because she says a killer is after her daughter.
When Archie refuses, Gretchen contacts his friend, reporter Susan Ward. She goes to the hospital where Gretchen gives her an exclusive about the first person she killed. This is taped and in return, Gretchen asks Susan to tell Archie that she needs to see him.
Another body is found. This is a woman who has been burned. While Archie and his unit investigate these two killings, there is something in Gretchen's message about her having an associate in her killings. Then she admits that the associate went renegade.
The author writes an interesting story. The cat and mouse game shows the search for the killer. The characters are correctly portrayed and the author gives her readers more information about Gretchen's past which helps us to understand her.
Chelsea Cain is a superb entertainer. The conclusion seemed a bit predictable but overall the story was clever and engrossing.
