Troops sent to Arizona Border. Too little, too late?

After meeting with Republican lawmakers, President Obama has agreed to send 1,200 National Guard troops to the Arizona border.  Senator John McCain would like to see an additional 3,000 troops deployed, but at least this is a start.  Maybe the pressure of Arizona SB1100, which has created a great deal of controversy (and highlighted Obama's failure to deliver on Immigration reform within his first year, as he promised).  The problem in Arizona could be reaching a breaking point and our immigration policies are in serious need of a complete overhaul.

During the Presidential campaign (and debates) I heard Obama claim that no terrorist had ever crossed the Mexican border.  I could not find a specific incident, but was fairly certain that there had been some.  The reason those incidents can't be found is likely because the government is keeping a tight lid on the situation.  The media seems to be kowtowing to the President out of fear of being marginalized like Foxnews.  Or maybe they are simply cheerleading "their guy."  Who knows...but earlier this month, WSBTV in Atlanta managed to shed new light on the issue.

My previous article in defense of the Arizona Law pointed to the crime and economic fallout of the border policy.  I completely missed the National Security ramifications of our porous border.  So how bad is the problem?  One rancher close to the border revealed some scary details.  This rancher claims to have found a Muslim prayer rug, military-type jackets with Arabic insignia (to include one with a patch of a plane flying into the World Trade Center).  That should be enough to send a chill down your spine right there.

But those are anecdotal examples.  They could be fabricated or exaggerated.  Who knows for sure?  What hard facts do we have?  How about statistics on the nationality of undocumented aliens captured near the border?  Those are hard facts.  By some estimates, ten aliens penetrate deep into the United States for every one who is captured.  According to the WSBTV report:

Agents say most of the illegals caught crossing are from Mexico or South America. Still, they say thousands of people caught are classified as O.T.M.'s, which stands for "other than Mexican". They report that includes hundreds of people from nations that sponsor terrorism.

Hundreds of captured illegals from countries that sponsor terrorism?  Those are scary numbers.

Whatever your view regarding border security, the National Security issues on the border should be given much greater examination.  HUNDREDS???  That means that (potentially) THOUSANDS of aliens from nations that sponsor terrorism entered this country undetected.  But even if those numbers are skewered, what if it is only half that made it through the web (as unlikely as that is)...that means you are still talking about at least a hundred undocumented illegals from terror-sponsoring nations.

If you have been against cracking down on the border before considering the National Security aspects of this issue, does this new information move you even a little?  It should.  If it doesn't, you should never call anyone "closed minded" again...because you are living in a glass house.

Just one day after I posted this review addressing the National Security issues associated with the border, the Associated Press released a story about a Somali Terrorist who the DHS warns is trying to cross into Texas from Mexico... http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/...iLdPy3FuV0BNOwD9FUT0SG0 Hmmmmm.
