20th century boys is created by Naoki Urasawa, the author of "Monster", it is an epic story taking place spanning 3 different time periods: early 70's, late 90's and around 2014.  The story started in the late 90's, as the main character Kenji learned that one of his childhood friend committed suicide, as he digged deeper, he realized that there is a bigger conspiracy going on, and the more he found out about the conspiracy, he found that the conspiracy has something to do with a "book of Prophecy" he and his friends wrote as children.  The childhood story are often told by flashbacks, in the early 70's, Kenji and his friends dreamt about saving the world, so they imagined that there is a plot to destroy the world on New Years Eve of 2000, and their gang eventually saved the day.  Kenji realized the person behind the conspiracy (the mysterious "Friend") must be one of his childhood friend, and is determined to stop it.  Unfortunately, he failed, and the story fast forward to 2014, as "Friend" controlled the world, and the people at large believed that "Friend" actually saved the day in New Years day of 2000.  There is only a ragtag group of people (many are older versions of earlier characters) that knows the truth and is determined to stop him.

The story for 20th century boys is really well written and interesting, it's very different from the majority of other mangas, as it has a complex story and well developed characters, and a plot and twists and turns and always keep you interested.  And the art is very stylized and detailed, you won't find the typical anime doe-eyed girls with unproportioned body parts, and super emo teenager boys, instead you have characters that are realistically portrayed for who they are.  I highly recommend this Manga to everyone!

Haha, I usually have a hard time watching the anime version of a manga once I have read it, it just feels different. I haven't really started reading a lot of new mangas in recent years though (family and kid kind of got in the way :p).
