It really does pay to belong to AAA.

When I first started driving on a full time basis back in 1970 one the first things my parents did was give me a membership to AAA.  It was quite thoughtful and very much appreciated and I have been a AAA member ever since.   When I first joined AAA the organization seemed to have two seperate and distinct missions:  to provide emergency road service, maps and tour books to its members and to lobby Congress for better and safer highways.

Over the past 25 years AAA has expanded by leaps and bounds.  Today there are 69 regional AAA clubs in the United States.  You can check out the club in your area by going to www.aaa.com.   Annual membership dues vary by club but are usually about $50.00 per year for the head of the household for the basic membership.  Addtional memberships for your spouse or teen living at home can be added for about half that rate.  As far as I am concerned the primary reason to join AAA is still the Roadside Assistance benefit.  Your cell phone is your link to the largest Roadside Assistance network in the world.  AAA in the United States and CAA in Canada have over 13,000 garages under contract to provide priority Roadside Assistance to AAA Club members,   If your vehicle is disabled AAA can help with such services as Minor Mechanical First Aid, Dead Battery Service, Flat Tire Service, Emergency Fuel Service and  Vehicle Lockout Service.   If it turns out that the vehicle is still not operable then AAA will tow it to the garage of your choice within a three mile radius at no charge to you.  After you have been a member for one year AAA allows you to upgrade your membership to "Plus".  For about $30.00 more annually the "Plus" membership entitles you to be towed up to 100 miles.  That is a huge difference and frankly it is worth every penny for the piece of mind it offers.   I can't tell you how many times in the past 40 years that AAA has come to my rescue.

Now if you have never been a AAA member you may not be aware that the club offer its members special discounts and very attractive offers on an ever expanding variety of goods and services.  Planning a business trip or vacation?  You can book a flight and make your hotel reservations with one of the experienced agents at AAA Travel.  Meanwhile, the folks at AAA Insurance offer all kinds of insurance at very compettive rates.  I know quite a few people who get their auto and homeowners insurance through AAA.  AAA also offers a wide variety of financial products including auto and home equity loans.  Members are also entitled to free passport photos as well as discounted movie passes.  The movie passes are an extremely popular item and make great gifts as well!  And hardly a year goes by when I don't stop by my local AAA to pick up some maps and tour books for an upcoming trip.

Years ago AAA had a slogan:  "It pays to belong."  It has certainly been my experience that this is the case. Just one roadside assistance call or tow practically pays for your annual membership.  If you have never been a member I urge you to go to the website and check it out.  In all honesty I consider the money that my wife and I spend for our AAA memberships to be the best money we spend all year.  Until something better comes along I will always be a AAA member.    Very highly recommended!

I've been a member for 11 years, and I had no idea about some of the additional services they provide. Discount movie tickets? Awesome! AAA has come to my rescue several times including a call last week when my battery died. It's never even a question as to whether or not I'll renew my membership.

I agree. I have given my children annual AAA memberships as a holiday gift and hear frequently that they have used the service. The only problem I have seen is that the "clubs" are not interchangeable. As one child moved to California, he had to join the California club. I can't just pay for him as a member of my family... This is merely an inconvenience but I wonder why the "clubs" can't be under one umbrella.

I'm a AAA member as well, and I agree, it really does pay to be a member! The annual cost of their roadside assistance program is well worth it and is a must because you never know what sort of trouble you might encounter on the road. Thanks for the great review, Paul! :)
