I’m normally turned off by blatantly sexual covers like this one has, since it usually means that the book is more about titillation of your libido rather than your brain. However, I am easily drawn into the fantasy line of traveling back in time, so I thought I would give it a try. For the most part, the story did not disappoint me.
I have to say that I was immediately surprised that the storyline was told from a mostly male viewpoint. Many romance books do a dual storyline and switch between her story and his, but this one was definitely male. And his female was not a lusty babe who needed a man to look after her which was another surprise. The female lead from the time frame of the early 1900’s was a bit too strong willed and stubborn with an average figure.
Hutchinson does a wonderful job of bringing the reader into the past and making you realize the “good old days” included a lot of backbreaking work with a bleak chance of getting a big break. He casually highlights the daily modern conveniences we take for granted which would have seemed like heaven in that era.
The tension flows well in the story and the characters are fully developed. Throughout the story you do wonder how their going back in time will affect history and present day. For me the end of the story fell a bit flat. I wanted more of a completed circle and a little more of a final twist. However despite that fact, I would still recommend the book for its overall storytelling ability.
