A Distant Soil: Eye and Mind Candy

  • May 21, 2010
Colleen Doran began this series in the 1980s when she was still a teenager. You can see this in the artwork and the general aesthetic which clearly had its roots in the mind of a teenage girl. Lucky for us this teenage girl has a great mind for storytelling, character, and artistic design. From my perspective, stories straight out of the teenage subconcious are a great thing, developed with the proper complexity. In fact, from my perspective, this series has it all: aliens, rebellions, gay sex, romance, androgyny, apocalyptic challenges, and epic heroes, and of course, that 1980s feeling.

The cast of characters is pretty large, but the heart of the story revolves around Seren, the Avatar of an advanced and corrupt civilization, his lover, and two kids who inadvertantly get caught up in the whole fight over who controls the universe. By book four (where the published story ends) the world hangs in the balance and I am terribly impatient to find out what happens next. Just so we're clear, this is an entirely different kind of Avatar from James Cameron's recent film, and is also unrelated to the Nickelodeon TV series of the same name.

Things I like about the series include: the empathetic handling of romantic involvement between characters (I like a good non-traditional love story), interesting and complex characters, the epic sweep of the universe Doran invented, and the 80s-tastic but beautiful artwork.

The only downside to this series is that its not done yet, and given that Colleen Doran does pretty much everything herself, it's hard to say when it will be done. I recommend this book for teenagers and adults, women in need of better comic book heroines, and alien angst afficionados.
