The High Point of L'Engles Austin Series and YA Novels

  • Jul 10, 2010
I first read this book as a teenager and fell in love with Madeliene L’Engle all over again. L’Engle is most famous for her novel A Wrinkle In Time. She does an amazing job weaving characters through the many books she has written. The kids in A Wrinkle In Time soon lead to the next generation of precocious and adventurous youth. In the Meet The Austin’s series L’Elngle tells the trials of a close knit family. The eldest Austin child, a young teenage girl, becomes the focus of A Ring of Endless Light. When the family travels to their grandfather’s house near the ocean his granddaughter is introduced to a young marine biologist who introduces her to a family of wild dolphins. Immediately she is drawn to the animals and grows through her connection with them. As she struggles with losing love, her grandfather’s continually failing health, and her own coming of age the dolphins bring clarity to her confusing world.
L’Engle does an amazing job of describing the beautiful cost and the deep intense emotions the entire family are facing. This book does well on its own and is strengthened by the rest of the series, so no matter if you read all the Austin books or just A Ring of Endless Light you are in for an easy enjoyable read. I loved this book as a teenager and I still got a lot out of it reading it as an adult. I think it’s a must read for any young girl.
