This book increases my appreciation for trees.

A Sanctuary Of Trees is a fascinating book. Trees are truly a sanctuary for people. They provide people with oxygen and they also purify our lakes and streams. There are endless applications for trees. Logsdon communicates his love for trees in this book well. He introduces species of trees I did not know existed. The first kind of tree I learned about is the poplar tree. Gene Logsdon went to a seminary school as a teenager in Indiana. He built a log cabin with his friends to use a club house. The thought of building something and getting so enjoyment out of it appeals to me. I learned that poplar wood make the best logs because they are straight and soft. Poplar wood logs can be easily notched together. I learned that the first hammocks came from wood from the hamack tree. I learned about a tree called the Osage orange tree. The wood from this tree can be used to make bows. Osage orange wood also contain British thermal units that can used to heat my home. I learned the oil from the sassafrass tree can be used to make tea and root beer. I love to drink root beer and tea. This little bit of information motivates me to try to plant a sassafrass tree near my home. I learned that the black locust tree can provide a lot of warmth.

I love to eat nuts and berries. Logsdon loves to eat hickory nuts, mulberries and elderberries. These are three foods that I have never eaten before. I learned that elderberries can be made into a wine. I also learned that acorns can be ground into a flour that is used for baking. I never thought about how many fruits grow on trees There is also a recipe for persimmon pudding that sounds delicious. This sweet treat is made with eggs, milk, soda, and persimmons. I love to eat syrup on my pancakes. Gene Logsdon reminds me that syrup comes from the sap of the sugar maple tree. There is a recipe for a squirrel stew that is made with chickens, squirrels and pork. I have never eaten squirrel before, but this recipe does sound interesting to me. This book increases my appreciation for all the things trees provide human beings.
