A Riveting Well-Written Thriller!

Cal Weaver is a private investigator whose son Scott had died falling off a roof.  Thinking that is was due to drugs, Weaver was doing his own investigation trying to find who gave Scott the drugs.  On a rainy night he is stopped at a red light and a young girl taps on his window asking for a ride home.  He is reluctant but she recognizes him and said that she knew Scott.  Against his better judgment, Cal relents and drives her.  She then starts acting weird and asks for him to stop at a diner so she can use the bathroom.  The girl that comes back is not her and Cal realizes something is going on with the two.

It turns out that the first girl was the Mayor's daughter and some cops show up at Cal's house wanting to know what he may have done because she is missing.  Cal needs to do his own investigation but he will soon find that the local cops are overzealous and some of the people that get involved with Cal end up dead. The author gives clues throughout that there is a mother and son holding a man captive somewhere and this will eventually be tied into the story.

This book does not have a lot of action but Barclay's writing style more than offsets the lack of action as the intrigue he builds is outstanding and he does an excellent job getting to the depths of Cal's soul as he narrates the tale. This is a book that is difficult to put down once you read it.  I found myself several times saying I will just read a few more pages and those few pages would quickly turn to 35 pages before I would wonder where the time went.  Barclay is obviously a very talented writer!  My only qualm with the book is that the last 40 pages or so seemed to drag on a bit but this did not prevent me from giving it five stars.
