A Spectacular Return

  • Nov 26, 2003
About Time is the first CD by Steve Winwood in six years. And its the first quality release by Winwood since Back In The High Life.

There are many strong aspects of this CD. First of all, Steve ditches the synthesizers and plays the Hammond Organ on eery track. The overall tones of the keyboards is reminiscent of his days with Traffic. Nearly every song features some engaging keyboard solos or embelleshments.

The contributions of Jose Neto on guitar and Walfredo Reyes on drums and percussion are certainly worth noting. Neto's guitar solos take on many styles and colors. Sometimes soft and light, other times with a rock hard edge, yet other times a strong world tone. The many rhythms from Reyes' drums also harken back to Traffic's Low Spark of High Heeled Boys when Rebok's tones ruled the day.

And the songs are quite engaging. Different Light bops along quite nicely while the cover of Why Can't We Live Together has some soulful urgency. Sylvia and Cigano rock n roll quite fiercly while Horizon and Domingo Morning are oh so pretty.

This CD certainly has staying power as I have been playing it for four days straight while driving around town. The songs may be a little long at times, but the quality instrumental tones overide that possible obstacle that may bother some listeners. A definite 4 1/2 star rating.
